The first year of the Lakehead Forest Plan was recently released for public viewing, as of this past March.

As reported by CBC, the plan will see nearly five million cubic metres of fibre harvested from the Lakehead Forest. The goal is to reduce the amount of birch in the forest, and increase the amount of coniferous trees.

According to Environmental Registry of Ontario, the Lakehead Forest is located in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Northwest Region and spans two administrative districts – Thunder Bay and Nipigon. The Forest is administered from the Ministry’s Thunder Bay District office, in the City of Thunder Bay. It is approximately 7,668 square kilometres. The Forest Management Plan is in effect for the 10-year period of April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2030.

The management of Ontario’s Crown forests is the responsibility of the provincial government, shared with forest products companies or groups of companies and communities, and was licensed to Greenmantle Forest Inc. in June 1998. The plan can be found at www.efmp.lrc.gov.on.ca/eFMP/home.do.
