To promote greener heating solutions, create new jobs and give a boost to the local economy, the government of Canada is investing $1,432,000 in a forestry initiative in the Yukon Territory. The multiyear investment also helps support biomass projects in Indigenous communities by helping them decide their bioenergy solutions. The initiative aims to increase Indigenous participation in forestry; enhance the competitiveness of the forest economy; reduce diesel use for heating and energy in northern, remote communities; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The project is co-funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Indigenous Forestry Initiative and Indigenous Services Canada’s Strategic Partnerships Initiative, both of which aim to create opportunities in forestry for Indigenous communities.
