In early April, Alamos Gold Inc. reported that a group of armed robbers obtained gold dore bars at its Mulatos mine site in Mexico, before escaping in an aircraft. According to The Canadian Press, a Spanish statement from Alamos’s Mexican subsidiary Minas de Oro Nacional said five heavily armed people subdued security guards who were loading the bars for transport on a plane on Wednesday morning.
At the same time, it said, a light plane, described as a ‘Cessna-206 type’, landed, and within 10 minutes the aircraft, the armed group and the bars were airborne and headed towards the mountains.
Rebecca Thompson, Vice President of Public Affairs at Alamos Gold Inc., says no one was hurt during the incident, adding that another mine, owned by Mineria Penmont, a subsidiary of Fresnillo, was robbed a few weeks before. She also said the loss was covered by insurance. To date, the amount lost to the incident has not been confirmed.
